FAQs

How long does an ad last at OnlyCars?

At OnlyCars.co.nz, your ads remain up until your car sells. You only pay once to start selling, without needing to renew or extend your listing.

How many photographs should I include when selling a car online?

You want to include as many photos as possible to give your car the best chance of selling quickly. We recommend 20 or more. Ensure your photos show the exterior from at least 4 angles (front, back and both sides) and the interior, including all the seats, the dashboard and steering wheel, and the boot and engine bay.

You will also need to include photos of any minor (scratches and paint chips) and major (dents, cracks in the windshield etc) damage on the car. And of course, make sure your photos are well-lit and in focus - people are less likely to buy a car online that they can't see properly.

What's the best way to write descriptions?

As with anything you're selling, the more information you can give the better. But don't just list the specs and features, tell a story via a detailed and honest description! Selling a car online is about creating a connection with a potential buyer. Talk about what this car has done for you and, most importantly, what it will do for them. Talk to your buyer about the difference this car will make to their lives, the comfort it offers, the haven it is when you're out on the road.

How do I value my car?

The best way to value your car is to compare it to other listings of the same make and model. Try to find listings of a similar condition and mileage to your vehicle, and use those details to determine the value of your car.

How do I spot a scam or fraud sale?

There are a number of ways to spot a fraudulent or scam sale as a seller. Car buyers who offer to buy immediately without inspection or offer over your listing price are likely to be fraudulent. Additionally, buyers who refuse to provide contact details or speak on the phone are best avoided.

There has also been a rise in fraudulent buyers offering to pay using PayID. Although they may promise that it is a safe and secure method of payment, avoid dealing with these buyers at all costs and report them where possible.

Finally, always remember to trust your gut: if an offer seems too good to be true, it probably is.

How do I receive leads?

Interested prospective buyers will contact you directly through the 'Enquire Now' button on your listing, and you can then choose to continue your conversation with potential car buyers through email, phone or SMS.

Can I contact car sellers?

Yes, you can. OnlyCars.co.nz makes contacting sellers quickly and securely easy with the 'Enquire Now' button on every listing.

What is the best practice for buying and selling privately and safely?

The best way to buy and sell your vehicle safely is to ensure that you are dealing with a real person. Trust your gut when it comes to communicating with car buyers/sellers, and remember that you are under no obligation to continue contact with the individual if you don't want to.

If you have suspicions about a buyer or seller, email hello@onlycars.co.nz and provide us with some details so we can properly review your concerns.
